The gelsolin protein

Gelsolin is a calcium regulated, actin-modulating protein that binds to the plus (or barbed) ends of actin monomers or filaments, preventing monomer exchange (end-blocking or capping). It can promote the assembly of monomers into filaments (nucleation) as well as sever filaments already formed. Gelsolin-related amyloidosis or familial amyloidosis, Finnish type (FAF) is a hereditary amyloid disease caused by a mutation in a precursor protein for amyloid (gelsolin) and characterized by corneal dystrophy and polyneuropathy. Our SWISSPROT sequences are here, the result of the multiple sequence alingment is here.
